Delaware: A Weekend Craft Beer Pilgrimage
Delaware: A Weekend Craft Beer Pilgrimage (with a Dogfish Head Twist)
Delaware might be a small state, but its craft beer scene packs a mighty punch. This past weekend, I embarked on a whirlwind tour of some of the state's best breweries, with a special focus on the iconic Dogfish Head. Buckle up, beer lovers, because we're about to get sudsy!
Day 1: A Tale of Two Dogfish Heads
My journey began at the Milton Wearhouse and production of Dogfish Head Brewery. Stepping into this building felt like entering a craft beer wonderland. The tour was informative and engaging, offering a glimpse into the magic behind their unique concoctions. Of course, the highlight was the tasting room, where I sampled classics like 60 Minute IPA and SeaQuench Ale alongside some of their more experimental offerings.
Next stop: Dogfish Head – Rehoboth. (The original Location) This beachside location boasts a laid-back atmosphere and stunning ocean views. I enjoyed a flight of their seasonal brews on the patio, the salty breeze perfectly complementing the hoppy flavors.
Final Stop: Chesapeake and Maine - Rehobeth. While we did not indulge in the complex menu of sea food here. A few drinks at the bar allow insight into a fantastic restaurant serving up craft cocktails as well as the Dogfish Head beers you know and love.
Day 2: Branching Out Beyond Dogfish
Big Oyster
Feeling the need to explore beyond the Dogfish empire, I ventured to Big Oyster Brewing Company in Milford. Their focus on fresh, local ingredients shone through in every sip. The DE Beach Blonde Ale was a refreshing summer brew, while the Barnburner Porter offered a complex, roasty taste.
Island Hopping for Hops
Thompson Island Brewing offered a unique experience. A tasting room that was unlike any other I have ever entered. A mix of modern and rustic while you sip on some different brews and enjoy their vast menu of food.
Evening at the Crooked Hammock
As the sun began to set, I found myself at Crooked Hammock Brewing. The lively atmosphere and expansive beer garden were perfect for a relaxed evening. Their core lineup offered something for everyone, and I particularly enjoyed their South of Somewhere, Coconut Lager.
Day 3: A Dogfish Head Finale
No Delaware craft beer trip would be complete without a stay at the Dogfish Head Inn. This quirky, beer-themed hotel offered a truly immersive experience.
Beyond the Brews
While the breweries were the stars of the show, Delaware offered plenty of other delights. Between brewery stops, I explored charming towns like Lewes and Rehoboth Beach, indulging in fresh seafood and soaking up the coastal charm.
A Toast to Delaware
My Delaware craft beer adventure was a delicious success. From the iconic Dogfish Head to the up-and-coming local breweries, the state impressed with its diverse and innovative brews. With its beautiful scenery, friendly people, and focus on fresh, local ingredients, Delaware is a hidden gem for any craft beer enthusiast. So, raise a glass (or flight) and plan your own Delaware beer pilgrimage – your taste buds will thank you!
