Trip Lancaster, PA
Lancaster offers a large amount of craft beer in a small area. The former American Captial (for one day during the revolutionary war) has some very unique breweries that offer some different aspects. Over my trip out I was able to visit 4 breweries.
Lancaster Brewing:
Lancaster Brewing is known for its flagship beer, the Blue Trail Shandy. The brewery is located in the Edward McGovern Tobacco Building, marking the first brewery in Lancaster in almost 40 years. The building has an old and rustic ambiance, resembling an older establishment with a restaurant focus and a small bar area. While the interior may feel hot and dated, the brewery boasts 20 beers on tap, which are well-regarded for their quality.
Spring House Brewing:
Spring House Brewing operates in an antique warehouse that combines a rustic and modern aesthetic. The brewery features a flagship taproom, a wood-fired pizza kitchen, and an arcade. The attic arcade and side porch create a unique and enjoyable experience. The overall vibe at Spring House Brewing is friendly and relaxed, with a staff that contributes to the welcoming atmosphere. Additionally, the venue offers ample space for private and community events.
2nd Gear Brewing:
2nd Gear Brewing focuses primarily on producing solid and modern-tasting beers. Situated in a hub of various local restaurants and establishments, this brewery offers a small tasting room with a well-finished bar area. Although the tasting room itself is compact, it provides a pleasant environment for beer enthusiasts. Visitors can enjoy their brews while immersing themselves in the vibrant surroundings of the local community.
Our Town Brewing:
Our Town Brewing has a fascinating history rooted in home brewing during the owners' college years at Penn State. Housed in a nearly 100-year-old building that was once a showroom floor for cars, the brewery occupies a spacious area with large windows offering views of the brew house. The bar area exudes a fantastic brewery vibe, fulfilling the dreams of any home brewer. The open space and historical elements contribute to a unique ambiance that attracts beer enthusiasts.
Each of the four breweries—Lancaster Brewing, Spring House Brewing, 2nd Gear Brewing, and Our Town Brewing—offers distinct experiences and atmospheres. Lancaster Brewing stands out for its long-standing presence and excellent beer selection, despite its older feel. Spring House Brewing provides a fusion of rustic and modern elements, including an arcade and dog-friendly patio. 2nd Gear Brewing appeals to those seeking a small but pleasant environment with a focus on quality beer. Finally, Our Town Brewing offers a historical setting and a spacious layout, perfect for enjoying a variety of brews. Ultimately, the choice of brewery will depend on individual preferences and the desired experience.
